Welcome to House of Ludington - Permanently Closed Due to Fire 12/2025

The House of Ludington, a landmark hotel nestled on Ludington Street in Escanaba, Michigan, stood as a living testament to history until its permanent closure in December 2025 due to a devastating fire. Established in 1865, this venerable establishment was among the oldest hotels in the United States, offering guests a unique glimpse into a bygone era blended with the charm of Lake Michigan’s breathtaking views.

Guests often praised the House of Ludington for its rich historical ambiance. The stately Queen Anne-style architecture, complete with its iconic domes and an exterior glass elevator, provided a distinctive silhouette against the lakeshore. Visitors frequently remarked on the spacious rooms and personalized hospitality—host Tyler, in particular, was noted for his attentiveness to guests with mobility needs. Many sought the Nelson Ludington Suite for its comfort and character, further illustrating the hotel’s appeal to travelers yearning for authenticity rather than modern luxury.

The hotel’s amenities, while modest by contemporary standards, reflected its heritage. Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and on-site dining at the restaurant and bar met essential needs, though guests were advised to bring personal items like hair dryers and toiletries. Situated just two blocks from the Escanaba Yacht Harbor and nearby beach, the House of Ludington provided a perfect base for those exploring the scenic Upper Peninsula region. Its location enabled easy access to outdoor activities and cultural experiences, enhancing its historical significance with natural beauty.

The legacy of the House of Ludington lies not only in its architecture but also in the stories etched into its walls. For many visitors, staying here was an experience steeped in history, a step back in time to a quieter, more elegant age. The fire that closed its doors in 2025 marked the end of an era for Escanaba and the Michigan travel community. While the hotel no longer welcomes guests, its memory endures as a symbol of resilience, heritage, and the timeless allure of the Great Lakes region.

In reflecting on the House of Ludington, one cannot help but feel a profound appreciation for how history, place, and hospitality intertwined here. It was more than a hotel; it was a keeper of stories, a refuge by Lake Michigan, and a cherished chapter in America’s hotel legacy.

We stayed at the House of Ludington this past weekend for a wedding in the area and were very happy with or visit. I see some reviews complaining about the state of this hotel not being NEW I guess you would say. Well guess what... if you couldn't figure out that one of the oldest hotels in the country wasn't going to feel like it was built 3 years ago, you're the dense one. Also, for anyone that can add 2+2 together, you should be able to figure out this place won't be as up to date as the places that charge $250 a night. Seriously people. The hotel was old and full of character 'which we loved'! I have been in hotel after hotel that all look and felt the same and I can't remember a single one of them. I will remember the house of Ludington for sure. Our room was clean though, yes, well worn. The staff was helpful and friendly and we didn't have a single issue our entire 3 day stay. We had the stay we excepted for the price, and it was pretty cool staying in a hotel that has been standing for almost 2 centuries. The restaurant was good, and I was very pleased with my meal. Stuffed Salmon with hollandaise sauce, perfectly cooked and seasoned baby red skin potatoes and green beans, as well as an accompanying salad bar with soup choices for $30. A very good value in my opinion. If I'm ever in the area again I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

What an amazing hotel! Built in 1865 you can feel the history. Set right on Lake Michigan we watched the sunrise. Our room was huge! Tyler was a wonderful host and made adjustments for our mobility challenges. Thank you for a fantastic night in Escanaba!

If you're looking for something different & interesting, this is the place. It's a very old hotel with squeaky floors. The amenities are limited, so bring your own hair dryer and soap. We stayed in the Nelson Ludington Suite and loved it. We were very comfortable. The staff are very nice & helpful.
